Building Better Communities
Building Better Communities
Executive Director

In January of 1950, the Camden Housing Authority was created through the efforts of the local government and many involved arid informed citizens. Fifty-five years later we continue to provide many services for the Camden community and surrounding area. We hope you will benefit from this website which will provide you with information concerning our team, our developments, our programs and the residents we serve.

It has been my pleasure to work in public service at this authority for over 34 years. Three men served as director of this authority prior to my watch.

Mr. Johnny Harrell was our first director who oversaw the construction of our first two developments, Hilltop Acres (later to become Fort Lookout Acres) in 1951 and Carver Courts in 1952.

Alexander Dyer (A.D.) Mason became director in 1957 and was the motivational force behind the construction of our remaining housing stock (six additional developments) between 1957 and 1971. His tenure was during the period of time public housing construction was needed to replace many of the substandard structures that existed in our city as well as many others throughout the United States.

Milton Donald Broach became director in 1973 and brought to our authority a knowledge of public service and the ability to manage people and programs. It was under his guidance that I was given the opportunity to learn and excel in this business. I will be ever grateful for the guidance and role he played in my development into a lifetime of public service.

We hope you enjoy this website and realize the important role the Housing Authority has provided for many who needed and require our services. It has been and will always be the mission of the Housing Authority to provide the very best decent, safe and sanitary housing at an affordable price for our community and the residents we serve. On behalf of the Board of Commissioners and our entire maintenance/management team we hope you realize that while our faces may change, the people we serve and their needs will always be present.

- James Coleman, Executive Director
