Drug Drop Box
Ouachita County now has a permanent Drug Drop Box located at the County Detention Center on Highway 7 South. The box was put into place because of prescription drug abuse in youth that, according to the AR Department of Health Department, is increasing faster than both alcohol and tobacco. It is reported that students are taking them from home and either using them or selling them to their peers at school. By getting used and unwanted drugs out of our homes as soon as it is determined that they are no longer needed, we are keeping them out of the hands of those who could potentially abuse them.
A Healthy Ouachita County Health Coalition, the Cooperative Extension Service, and the Ouachita County Sheriff's Department worked together with several different groups to get monies to create a permanent box. This permanent drop box is also an alternative to flushing pills and medications into the sewer system which contaminates the water supply and/or pollutes our landfills. Using the drop box allows the drugs to be incinerated in a safe manner. This is a drive-through drop box and is monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is safe for you, and brings us a healthier Ouachita County.
